Launched in 1935 at the H. Upmann factory, the name is attributed to the famous Count of Montecristo, the hero of Alexandre Dumas. Today, the Montecristo is the most sought after cigar in the world and makes up almost 50% of annual Cuban exports. Known to cigar lovers under the pseudonym Monties, these cigars were first known by their numeric name Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Class A and Especiales were added to the line in the early 70s.
